i received a gift from francis last monday, a paper bag containing lasagna and a cake. he's an agent from a company soliciting memberships. the gift was a small token of appreciation for helping him achieve his quota. since i already bought food for merienda, i decided to bring it home.
after getting off the bus at espana, a little hand tugged at my arm. the child begged me for money. without even a second thought, i shooed her away. but then it occured to me that i had a paper bag filled with food.
i called on her and said "tumatanggap ka ng pagkain?"
"opo" she replied nodding her head slightly.
i handed over the paper bag and observed her reaction. at first, she looked disappointed. i guess she was expecting me to give her money. upon opening the package, her smile grew ear to ear and proudly showed off the contents to her dad who was busy tending to their "kariton".

after sharing this story with a friend, he commented that it was a waste to give something that probably was delicious (esp. since i haven't tasted it). i disagree. i think the kid would enjoy the cake and lasagna more than i would. Ü
note: during my stay at an NGO, we were told that it would be better not to give alms since it encourages a certain kind of lifestyle. but if you must or really want to give, as much as possible, give in kind.
